  • Tranquil: calm and peaceful and without noise, violence, worry, etc.

She stared at the tranquil surface of the water.
The hotel is in a tranquil rural setting.
A spasm of pain crossed his normally tranquil features.

quiet = We live in a very quiet neighbourhood.
peaceful = He needed a peaceful place to write his novels.
sleepy = They retired to a sleepy little village.
tranquil = The hotel is in a tranquil rural setting.
restful = Our holiday was quiet and restful.

  • Objective: something that you plan to do or achieve:

Her main/prime objective now is simply to stay in power.
Can the sales team achieve/meet its financial objectives?

aim = Our aim in protesting is to raise awareness of the unfairness of the system.
goal = My goal in life has always been to be financially independent.
objective = One of my objectives for this year is to increase sales.
target = If you meet your sales targets you will receive a generous bonus.
dream = When I was growing up my dream was to perform in front of millions of people.
hope = My hope is that there will be some kind of positive outcome to this process.

based on real facts and not influenced by personal beliefs or feelings:

an objective and impartial report
I can’t really be objective when I’m judging my daughter’s work.

  • veteran: a person who has had a lot of experience of a particular activity:

a 20-year veteran of the New York Police Department

someone who has been in the armed forces during a war:

a Vietnam veteran
the surviving veterans of World War II

Thousands of veterans will take part in a commemoration of the battle.
Grizzled veterans in uniform gathered at the war monument.
The ceremony was attended by many of the surviving veterans of the Second World War.
He is a veteran of the stage.
She is a veteran of many election campaigns.

  • Stimulate: to encourage something to grow, develop, or become active:

The government plans to cut taxes in order to stimulate the economy.

to make someone excited and interested about something:

The show was intended to stimulate and amuse.
[ + obj + to infinitive ] Good teachers should ask questions that stimulate students to think.

to cause part of the body to operate:

The drugs stimulate the damaged tissue into repairing itself.
Standing on your head is supposed to stimulate hair growth.

The athletes had taken pills to stimulate their metabolic rate.
This legislation is designed to stimulate the faltering economy.
The government is taking steps to stimulate business development in economically distressed areas .
It’s an artificial device which stimulates the auditory areas of the brain.
It’s not the sort of movie that stimulates the old grey matter much.

  • Imperative: extremely important or urgent:


[ + that ] The president said it was imperative that the release of all hostages be secured.
[ + to infinitive ] It’s imperative to act now before the problem gets really serious.

used to describe the form of a verb that is usually used for giving orders:

In the phrase “Leave him alone!”, the verb “leave” is in the imperative form.
