  • Contradict: (of people) to say the opposite of what someone else has said, or (of one fact or statement) to be so different from another fact or statement that one of them must be wrong:

examples:
If you’re both going to lie, at least stick to the same story and don’t contradict each other!
He kept contradicting himself when we were arguing – I think he was a bit confused.
How dare you contradict (me)!
Recent evidence has contradicted established theories on this subject.

  • Outrageous: shocking and morally unacceptable:

examples:
The judge criticized the “outrageous greed” of some of the bankers.
[ + that ] It is outrageous that these buildings remain empty while thousands of people have no homes.
These prices are just outrageous (= much too high).

  • habitat: the natural environment in which an animal or plant usually lives:

examples:
With so many areas of woodland being cut down, a lot of wildlife is losing its natural habitat.

  • ethical: relating to beliefs about what is morally right and wrong:

examples:
Transplantation of organs from living donors raises ethical issues.
Europe’s varied cultural, political and ethical norms
a minefield of ethical problems
It may be feasible to clone human beings, but is it ethical?

  • likelihood: the chance that something will happen:

examples:
This latest dispute greatly increases the likelihood of a strike.
[ + that ] There is every likelihood that more jobs will be lost later this year.
There is little likelihood now that interest rates will come down further.

synonyms for likelihood:
chance = There’s a good chance he’ll resign.
probability = What’s the probability of winning?
odds = What are the odds that she takes him back?
likelihood = The treaty increases the likelihood that the cease-fire will hold.
possibility = There’s a distinct possibility I won’t be able to make it to the pub tonight.
