Day 7 Sample Essay Both views and opinion

Some people believe that teenagers should  concentrate  on all school subjects. But, others  believe that teenagers should focus on the subject that they are best at  or that  they  find the  most interesting.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People  have different views on whether teenagers should have a choice for  their school subjects or  should they  study all the  subjects. Both the  views  have their  own  reasons, though I  think studying all subjects is a better  approach.

First of all, teenage is not  the age when  students can make a wise choice. Since by this  age, most of the  children do not have enough  maturity to make decisions, especially the ones which are going to impact their whole life. Given  such liberty, there are  chances that they might  select subjects which either need less efforts on their part or which are relatively popular among their peers. Subjects like literature  or  moral studies along  with math  may  not be a  part of their list.

Advocates of  giving freedom to choose one’s favorite subjects cite better understanding and performance as their reasons. When a student is supposed to study  only the subjects of his choice, it is natural that he will put his best efforts. Studying would no longer be a stress for  these students as can  be  seen by life stories of  many successful scientists or  businessmen, who showed a keen interest in respective subjects  during  school days. This would then definitely result in better  academic performance.

To my mind, school going students deserve a holistic education which includes/inculcates all major subjects. Today’s life, especially job market, needs people who at least have basic understanding  of all fields. Even a scientist needs understanding of English to write or read research papers and an author may need basic understanding of finance. Specialized choice is already available for tertiary study, schools should not be a part of it.

.

.

.

To conclude, better school performance can be  a reason to  give liberty of subject selection in schools. However, immaturity of this age along with need to have basic knowledge of all fields make it a non-practical option.
