A common belief among people is that character of a person is intricately linked with literature he has studied. This view is debated by some as they feel studying literature is a wastage of time. Both the groups have their own reasons to support, though I feel literature defines the personality of a person.

.

.

Although impact of literature on character of a person is visible to some, there are many who question the utility of studying literature. Though I personally favor studying of literature, my essay will discuss both viewpoints along with my opinion.

.

.

.

First and foremost, the study of literature makes a person open minded. While studying literature, a person comes across prose and poetry of not only his own society, but also from other parts of the world. This means, the student gets deep and profound understanding of life and culture. For example, one of the most famous novels taught in colleges “crime and Punishment” gives insight of Russian lifestyle to the world. Hence, it is evident why studying literature has a lasting impact on a person’s psyche.

.

.

Opponents of teaching literature usually find it an extra burden on students. In order to study literature, a student needs to extract time out of his daily schedule of other important subjects like science and math. A person with a desire to be a doctor or an engineer would definitely find literature study worthless. Additionally, poems and prose studied in schools are normally forgotten by everyone in a few years. So, it is natural to consider literature redundant by many scholars, especially from science or commerce fields.

.

In my opinion, literature is an indispensable part of study as far as imbibing moral values is concerned. A child may forget the poem or story studied in school, yet the morals and gist of values remain with him throughout his life. This is the reason why most of the schools keep literature as a compulsory part of their curriculum. (This is the reason why most of the schools deliberately pick those literary works which a child a better citizen for future.)

.

To conclude, though literature may seem useless to science and commerce aspirants, it is an unavoidable part of syllabus. Without literature, it is not possible for students to become openminded and well-groomed citizens.

.

.

A major argument against teaching of literature is lack of career options. When literature as a career option is compared to other fields like medicine or medicine, it does not seem much lucrative. To be a good artist is not only time consuming but also extremely competitive. Becoming a renowned doctor is easier than becoming an eminent writer like J. K. Rowling. Therefore, it is evident why many scholars are not in favor of literature as a subject.
